“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” – Robert Frost

  1. Make sure your poetry book is professionally published (it’s hard to market a bad product).

Everyone is more drawn to something that is more professionally done than something that is not professionally done. Things that are professionally done encourages one to have more confidence in what it has to offer, it is no different from a poetry book. Publishing quality and professional book compel your target audience to purchase your product as it is viewed as being well done and therefore viewed as being a good investment.

  1. Know your audience.

It is the attention of a particular audience that you should aim to capture. Ways to figure out your target audience is by looking at not only your most enjoyable and preferred style of writing but also on the messages behind the poetry you write and which demography it is best suited for. Be truthful to yourself about the group of people you are passionate about helping whether the poems are concerning nature, politics, relationships, whatever it is. Start with these in mind to settle on your target audience. There are many books that have been published “fighting” for the attention of others and your awareness of your target audience’s likes and dislikes, inclusive of the design of the cover of the book, will assist in your audience being more decisive to choose your poetry book over others.

  1. Be willing to invest in marketing your book.

The success of your poetry book is not just based on the time you invest in publishing the book, but it is also dependent on how well it is marketed. Marketing is what puts your book out there and makes it known. Once your book is known, you will get sales.

  1. Utilize social media.

In this digital age, using social media is a must to market your poetry book. It allows for a wider viewing of what you have to offer, which increases your chances of greater sales, compared to if social is not utilized. Additionally, using social media allows you to engage with your audience through conversations. As you converse with your audience whether commenting on a picture or through direct messaging, it seems more personal and people like personal. With this, people will trust the content you have to offer more.

  1. Host a reading or book launch (introduce yourself and your gift to the world).

Hosting a reading or book launch gives people an insight as to the poems you have written. Note, you are not sharing all your poems with those who have not purchased the book, what you are doing is giving them a “taste” to intrigue their poetic appetites. You giving them an appetizer that encourages them to stay for the whole meal. In other words, they will be more interested in purchasing your book and sharing with others to do the same.

The hardest part of anything is to start, because of the “what ifs” and fears, but once you pass that hurdle, the journey of writing or/and publishing your book begins. Take the step this summer, share your gift with the world by publishing your poetry book.
