If you have already published your book and have trouble selling it, you may just be sabotaging your success and you are unaware of it. If you are considering publishing your book, you may just have fallen in the trap of believing these myths. Here are three myths that you may believe that may be sabotaging your book sales and how to comeback those myths with truths for your success as an author.

  1. Once you publish the book, people will buy it

If you have never been told this before, you are being told now, publishing a book does not guarantee sales. In publishing your book, there is a message to be shared with the world, but how can the world know about it unless they are told? Who can share with people in the best way what the book is about and best compel them to purchase it than the person who has written the message himself/herself? If you believe in the message of your book, if you believe it will help people, then you have to market the book. Don’t just have your book sitting in a storefront, whether it is an online store or physical store. Yes, people may see your book in a store and consider it, but there is no surety that they will purchase it (especially if they have no idea of it beforehand). If you market your book through the use of graphics, book reviews and more, people are more likely to be interested and to be on the lookout for it.

 2. You don’t need a marketing budget as an author

Marketing is essential for anything that you want the public to see and in wanting your book to be marketed as best as possible, at least once you may have to open your purse or wallet. You do not want to spend “willy-nilly”, but intentionally, which is why you need a budget. You need not to just have the budget, but to stick to it. You want to make clear where you want your money going, sponsored ads, fliers, whatever you choose. The further reaching you want your book, not just time, but money will have to be spent, be intentional about it.

 3. Posting on social media will automatically increase sales

Social media is great, but posting every day “buy my book, buy my book” does not guarantee anyone will buy your book. For one, it may cause message fatigue. Message fatigue is when an audience views or hears something so often that they become annoyed or/and tired of it to the point where it has little to no effect on them after a while. While you want to ensure that wherever you are marketing your book that it is relevant and you have your target audience as easily accessible as possible, it is best to build your email list and not rely on social media alone. This helps to filter those who are just seeing your content to those who are interested and are more likely to purchase your material.
