The best way to succeed is to plan. Where you have a vision, make a plan. Nothing beats starting, that is the hard part of planning, but to know where to start can be just as difficult. Here are three steps to writing your memoir that will surely help you.

  1. Get Clear On Your Why

Knowing what is great. Knowing when, that’s fine, but knowing your why, now that’s important. Your why will make you feel motivated when you want to quit. The why speaks to the purpose behind writing the memoir and it is it that will actually have a lasting impact. If you are yet to have a why think about who you want to impact and what theme or thing of importance you believe runs through your story. Think of how you want those who read your piece to feel after reading and the major thing(s) you would like to leave them with. Think of your why.

 2. Know your ideal reader

The most successful books to date have been written for a niche audience. Think of a demographic and what problem such a group of people has that your memoir may help to solve. Wanting to help everyone is not a bad thing, but through a product, it is not always the best or most efficient or effective thing. If your target is the general public, you will do more harm than good as your memoir will undoubtedly lack crucial principles to be learned by every age group you target. Groups range from teenagers, to single mothers, from those who want to climb the corporate ladder to those who have. “The world is your oyster”, but you can’t maximize your profit or impact by trying to solve all its problems in your memoir. Find your target audience and stick to it. You will definitely impact people outside of your target audience, but your primary focus is those you are targeting.

 3. Create an outline

Plan! The outline is the roadmap to the memoir’s success. Just as businesses rise and fall on leadership, so the success of writing your book is dependent on the outline you create. Without an outline, you will often be thoroughly confused with the direction in which you are going as you write. You are trying to maximize how you can impact, so be intentional about investing time in everything that will ensure this. Invest time in creating your outline.
