Building an author brand is important, but what is also important is that the brand that is built is a profitable one. You will have to invest time in doing so. Think about ways in which the message on your social media platforms and even offline can be as congruent as possible with the message from your book or books. You want to ensure that the essence of your messages is consistent throughout.
- Be clear on your ideal readers
Knowing the ideal readers for your book will help you navigate how you engage in your marketing strategies. It will help you understand the words to use that will most compel such an audience. Not to mention, it will help you get an idea as to which graphics to use and what stories to most highlight so as to reel your audience in and keep them. Knowing your ideal audience will help you filter through the noise of the ideas you may have in wanting to build your author brand.
2. Know what makes you unique (or your book unique)
It is not enough to simply know your ideal reader. In a world where people are increasingly producing similar content, you have to know what makes you stand out. What makes the message in your book so unique? What makes you unique? Why should anyone take time out to look to you, to listen to your voice, to read the words you have written? Why? If you are able to answer these questions without resorting to feeling as if you are just like everyone else, then you are ready to build your profitable author brand. If you are unable to answer these questions, it is not too late to find the answers. Dig deep. Why did you become an author in the first place? What issue are you helping others with through your content? What do you have to offer?
3. Build your email list
If you have not heard of an email list before, where have you been? Seriously. It is undoubtedly one of the best ways to build your brand. An email list is a compilation of emails for those who have shared an interest in what your brand has to offer to the point of them wanting to purchase your product or pay for your services. Such a group tends to have some type of exclusivity, as they are not merely people who view your content, but they are more deliberate in investing in what you have to offer.
4. Launch an author website
While social media helps in building your brand, having your own website does wonders. There is a connotation of professionalism in having your own website and not to mention if you own the domain, now that is a plus. Having an author website helps to narrow your content to things concerning your author brand, though it should be a part of your overall brand. Having the website will encourage people who are interested in your brand to continuously return to your website, where some will eventually do business with you.
5. Be consistent with sharing value
In the book, “The Go-Giver”, Bob Burg encourages his readers to give more in value than you receive in payment. This is not to say that you should not be paid sufficiently for your efforts, but more so, that you should be consistent in producing valuable content to your audience regardless of the returns. For sure, if you have to change up how you do things, go ahead, but never neglect to share quality content. People will treasure that and eventually desire to do business with you and for those who already are, it will help in keeping them.
6. BONUS: Share your story
Your ideal audience having the insight into your story will have a better understanding as to why your brand is what it is and be more intrigued in seeing what you have to offer. Your story is the most powerful thing you will have to share. No one has lived the life you have so far and no one will be able to live the life set out before you. No one has stood in your exact shoes (even if similar). No one can offer the beauty of your story. You own your story, share it. It cannot be separated from your brand.
