Experience is one of the best teachers. Thankfully, you do not have to experience something to learn a lesson, you can learn from the experiences of others. Here are five mistakes to avoid as an author. Do not make the same mistake other aspiring and new others have.

  1. Not Believing in Yourself

Not believing in yourself will always bring you more harm than good, if any good at all. If you do not believe in yourself, inevitably, you will not believe in the impact your words will have on those who read them. Why would you use your best ideas on something you do not see them worth using on? Exactly! You will not. Your belief in yourself plays a major role in all you put your hands to. Think about it, haven’t the best results in all you have done come from the things you were most confident in? You are valued and so are your words, that is not an opinion, but a fact. So quit the pity party, you have lives to impact. Go get that pen, a piece of paper and start writing.

  1. Trying to Write and Edit at the Same Time

This may sound strange to you, but do not edit and write at the same time. It is not that you can’t, but the disadvantages that come with doing so aren’t worth it. For one, you will take a longer time to write, as your mind is multitasking focusing on ideas and corrections that need to be made to your work. With this said, it may also limit the ideas and your creativity to the piece you are working on. This is so, for as your brain tries to focus on the corrections that need to be made, you may easily forget all the wonderful ideas you wanted to write and how you wanted to write them. This may end up leaving you drained and frustrated. Write endlessly first, write all you are thinking. When you have completed writing, then you can edit. Try it and see how more fulfilled you will feel, how convenient it is and how less of a time you will spend on writing your book.

  1. Not Making Time to Write

Set a regular time to write. Life is very demanding and often if you do not plan for something, it will not get done. Schedule a time you know will work best and get it done. Your book will not write itself. It also helps you to properly pace yourself to avoid getting overwhelmed, especially if there is a concrete deadline (which there should be).

  1. Not Setting A Deadline

Napoleon Hill said it best, “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” A deadline will help you to keep the vision of writing your book in focus, as well as, help you stick to your scheduled writing time. It is awesome to dream, but dreams don’t accomplish themselves, you have to properly plan for them.

  1. Releasing the Book With No Marketing Plan

To not have a marketing plan before releasing your book is a big NO. Probably a few people like a president of a country could get away with it, but we aren’t all the president so we have to put in the work. You want the best to come of releasing your book. You want to be able to successfully sell to your target audience and you want people to already be engaged and expectant of what is to come of your book before you release it. Promoting your book before release also helps with increasing your audience which will result in more sales compared to if you do not promote it.
