If you are going to do something, why not do it well? Marketing your book has to be intentional and not a random act if you want to make a profit. Here are some mistakes to avoid as an aspiring author if you want your book to sell:
- Thinking their book is for everyone
You can’t help everyone. This is something you have to accept. Do know though, that you can help someone and you actually help more by targeting a specific group. Your story has to be targeted to a particular group, it will help with focusing and highlighting the necessary information you would like to share in your book. Additionally, potential readers look for books that are geared towards solving their own issues. Different groups have different issues. You cannot solve everyone’s issues. So, in accepting this truth, consider a group you would like to help and focus on selling to them with content you will create for them.
2. Not building an author platform before you publish your book
If you are an emerging writer, then find a platform where you can build an audience and a following to share on. It can be on topics you are most passionate about, your experiences or expertise. The platforms can range from social media to writing your blogs on a website or your own. Having an audience or a following before publishing your book will help tremendously when you have published it. This is so as you would have been known by a few or many and those who know you will even help share your book without you asking if they enjoy the content you shared before publishing your book.
3. Not having a book marketing plan
There is no guarantee that because you have written a book that it will sell. The content could be great, but if there is no marketing plan to make known your book sales will be little to none. You do believe in the power of your story, don’t you? For this reason, you should do your best to maximize its purchase and therefore impact on your target audience. A marketing plan will help with this. Note, a plan also means that you are intentional about what you share and how you promote the book, it is not a random act. Your story is powerful, maximize on how you can impact, create a marketing plan.
