Are you passionate about helping others grow in their spiritual lives?
Writers of devotionals should have a pure heart and right motive (James 3:8-11).
Here are ten steps to writing and publishing a devotional:
- Brainstorm
Brainstorm topics people always ask for your help on or you feel most passionate about. You cannot write a devotional or do anything for that matter to inspire others if you are ignorant about what you are sharing. Do people admire the Confidence you have in Christ, your devotion to prayer or your joyful personality? Think about it, write about it.
2. Pray and ask God for direction
Nothing is worth leaning on your own understanding for. You may even miss the mark and what God is leading you to do, because you failed to commune with Him on His desire for the direction of the devotional you will write – You most likely will. As a kingdom author, remember, all you are doing is for The Glory of God, which means His leading is more important than your preferences. Pray about it.
3. Research the Topic
Do research for scriptures to align with the topic you will be writing on. You want to give to the readers the best of what you are able to offer and research adds to what you can offer. Regardless of how simple you think the topic is or how much you are sure you already know, may humility take its course, research won’t hurt.
4. Choose a Format to Present Devotional
Choose how you will write, format and present your devotional for the purpose of your audience. Remember, don’t just write, write remembering your audience – Ensure whatever you’re writing, it is fitting for them.
5. Target Audience
Decide on your target audience, it will help a lot. Knowing your target audience will help you to get an idea as to what your writing style should be like, the colours and image or images to use, and even the font you should use in writing your devotional. Not to mention, knowing your audience will help you to understand how to market the devotional.
6. Wait to Edit
Start writing your devotional without editing. Writing and editing simultaneously can often lead to overthinking. Overthinking may lead to overwriting, underwriting or not writing at all. Wait until you have completed your work, then edit. Sometimes writing and editing at the same time may thwart your creativity.
7. Keep it short and simple yet impactful
Devotionals do not have to belong, once something is God-breathed, it will be impactful.
6. Build an author platform
Build a platform for yourself as an author on platforms that your audience are on. Share your content, share who you are.
9. Research steps for publishing your devotional
Have a strategy you use in writing a devotional. Not just a step-by-step process in your writing, but order in how you want your message to be conveyed to your audience.
10. Decide when you will launch your devotional
Deciding when you will launch your devotional is crucial. It will help you to plan properly and execute well for the success of your book.
